Nikon D40 Autofocus Not Working. Nikon D40 autofocus not working. I can stand perfectly still focusing on object scene and image not in focus. If so you are dealing with an autofocus problem. I have two lenses an 18-55 and a 55-200 and first one.
After I release my lenses auto focus seems to work as it should. When in autofocus mode you press shutter button down and the illumination light comes on without focusing and when shutter button pressed all the way down nothing happens. If so you are dealing with an autofocus problem. The problem is probably not with the camera as the Nikon D40 doesnt have the autofocus motor on the body instead the motor is in the lenses thus only some lenses will work with autofocus on the D40 can you post a link or take a picture of the lens not working. When I use auto mode the flash pops up it will focus but the shutter will not click. Worked over the summer and our 55-200mm lens works fine so its definitely not the camera.
Tried cleaning and still does not autofocus.
Hold on to the very end of your lens and the camera base. Check also that no part of the lens is broken. That Nikon decided to cut costs and price by not including a camera-based autofocus motor does not reflect anything terrible about Nikon as a company IMHO. If your lens says AF-S youre fine. I hope this works for others. If youre trying to do something below and it wont work its because you have the top dial set to AUTO.
